Try a worked example
Before choosing a pair, check three things in order: a shared color number or shape, the same row or column, and an empty line between them. A diagonal pair never works, even when the tiles look identical.
Imagine one row containing 3●, an empty cell, an empty cell, and 3▲. Can the two numbered tiles match? What changes if another tile occupies either empty cell?
Check the answer
Yes: the number 3 identifies the same color, so the shapes may differ. The clear line is three steps long. An intervening tile blocks the pair; matching features do not let a path pass through it.
Scoring this move: 100 base points + 10 for each empty cell between the pair + 35 for each earlier pair in the current combo. This example earns 120 as the first pair, or 155 as the second consecutive pair. Opening a lane is useful, but protect the combo by checking the path before tapping.
